CHILD welfare group Akap Bata together with Anti Violence Against Women and Children advocates from Mariposa network pledged support to broadcaster and fellow child advocate Sel Guevara.
No to violence
Sel Guevarra cries foul after being beaten up by her former boyfriend chef Robert Eric Spakowski in his house. Guevarra will pursue a case R.A. 9262 or the Violation against Woman and Children act against Spakowski.
“In a society where the culture of silence is prevalent, we laud Sel Guevarra for taking up the courage to speak against violence.” says Mara Manalang Akap bata spokesperson.
“Hopefully, more women and girl children who experience the same will be inspired to follow her lead.” Manalang adds.
“Studies show that 9 out of 10 victims of VAWC would prefer to be silent than speak up. “ Manalang explained
Sel Guevarra is a broadcast journalist and a sportscaster. She is also advocates for the welfare and rights of children and has been an active akap bata volunteer since last year.
No limit
Lean Flores of Mariposa network says that “Studies suggest that girl children as early as 10 years old are exposed to commercial sexual exploitation”. Another study from Center for Women Resources (CWR) states that in every 43 minutes, a woman is victimized.
According to Manalang, one to two children experience violence every hour. Every day, six to seven children are battered, nine are being raped. Almost 25 percent of women aged 15-19 experience physical or sexual harassment.
Thus this is a clear indication that “there is no “age limit” when it comes to violence”. Flores explained “Whether victim or not, women should be resolute to fight and end violence against women and children. “ said Flores.
“It is also important to empower the girl children of today to make them empowered women of tomorrow,” Manalang said.
