Soldier killed in rebel ambush in Surigao

ONE soldier was killed and his companion was wounded after they were ambush by suspected New People’s Army (NPA) rebels Wednesday morning in a remote village in Surigao del Sur, police reports said Thursday.

Reports sent to Camp Crame by Caraga Police regional office identified the soldier killed in the ambush as S/Sgt. Gilbert Sionzon, 43 and wounded is Ampol Daging, 31, a military informer.

Caraga police spokesman, Supt. Martin Gamba, said in the report that the ambush incident took place at around 8am Wednesday along the national highway in Brgy. Magosilum, Cantillan, Surigao del Sur.

The reports said that two ambush victims were on board a motorcycle and were on their way to Brgy. La Union in the same town when they were ambushed by unknown number of rebels.

The rebels quickly fled towards unknown direction after the ambush while the two were brought to a nearby hospital for medical treatment, but the soldier was declared dead on arrival by attending physician.

The reports said that responding policemen recovered from the crime scene a Honda XLR motorcycle owned by Daging, a 45 caliber pistol with magazine loaded with six ammunition; three cartridges and a pair of slipper.
